Bucks for Buckles Event

$1 will be given per car where all occupants are wearing their seat belt

Kansas City, MO- The Maternal and Child Health Coalition, Safe Kids Kansas, State Farm Insurance Companies, and the Department of Transportation will participate in the Bucks for Buckles event on Friday, September 2, 2005.  Representatives from these organizations will be distributing one dollar bills to vehicles where all occupants are secured by seat belts and/or car seats.  Only one dollar will be given per vehicle. The purpose of this event is to raise awareness about the importance of wearing a seat belt and properly restraining children in motor vehicles.

Use of seat belt and child restraints is the most effective way to protect people in motor vehicle crashes.  From 1975 to 2001, safety belts are estimated to have saved 147,246 lives and have prevented an additional 3.8 million injuries nationwide.  In 2004, there were 461 motor vehicle fatalities in Kansas.  Sixty-six percent (66%) of those killed were found to be unbelted.  Also, motor vehicle crashes remain the number one killer of Kansas children ages 1-17.

Several of Maternal and Child Health Coalition members will be distributing dollar bills at the southeast intersection of N 38th Street and State Avenue near the State Farm office of Stan Harrison (3737 State Ave Kansas City, KS 66102-3830).

Maternal and Child Health Coalition promotes the health of mothers and children through community planning, education, advocacy and collaboration with organizations addressing infant mortality, immunization, childhood obesity, maternal health and child safety.
