What? Kansas City Healthy Start operates on a $6 million grant from the Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration. This program is aimed at reducing infant mortality and improving the health of pregnant women and children in targeted zip-codes in Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri.
How? Kansas City Healthy Start Initiative will:
  • Work with pregnant women, fathers, and families with infants up to two years of age.
  • Reach out to women who are unaware of services or unable to use them because of inadequate transportation or lack of child care.
  • Provide additional training and education for new and expectant mothers, as well as professional providers in areas such as nutrition, parenting, family planning, and smoking cessation.
  • Strive to increase the childhood immunization rate.
  • Increase the number of pregnant or postpartum women who are screened and treated for depression.
  • Pinpoint gaps in existing prenatal and child health services, identifying barriers preventing infants and expectant mothers from receiving proper care.
  • Coordinate and link existing prenatal and child health programs focusing on improved case management.
  • Address the needs of diverse populations, focusing on demographic and societal characteristics, in order to reduce differences in perinatal health outcomes.
  • Focus on inter-conceptional care (care between pregnancies) with an emphasis on pregnancy prevention and child abuse prevention.
Mother & Child Health Coalition partners with many community organizations in implementing the Kansas City Healthy Start Initiative
